Maritime terminal
Petronors maritime terminal is 5 km from the refinery. It entered service in 1975 and has one of the deepest draughts in Europe, using mooring jetties rather than buoys.
The 2.444 m long pier has six berths fitted out to offload crude oil and load petroleum products, liquefied gas and asphalt. It can take tankers with draughts up to 30 m and 500,000 DWT. In terms of weight, it accounts for over 50% of the movements into and out of the port of Bilbao.
Refinery
The Petronor refinery is in the Somorrostro valley, 20 km. from Bilbao and 5 km. from the harbour at Punta Lucero. It stands on land belonging to the municipalities of Muskiz, Abanto and Zierbena, below the historical castle of Muñatones, which forms part of the companys logo.
Pipelines
The refinery is linked by pipelines to the berths in the harbour at Punta Lucero, to the nearby terminals of CLH (Santurce and Somorrostro/ La Arena) and, via the latter, to the main Spanish network of oil pipelines. It also has direct pipe links to numerous local industrial facilities including the Iberdrola power station at Santurce, Butano, Cabot, ESERGUI and TEPSA.
Storage facilites
Raw material and product storage facilities comprise 12 crude oil tanks with a capacity of 894,000 m3 and 74 intermediate and finished product tanks at the refinery and the terminal with a capacity of 1,178,400 m3.
Quality management
The Petronor refinery holds a current certificate from Lloyds Register Quality Assurance attesting to its compliance with standard UNE EN ISO 9001:2000, applicable to oil refining operations, including design and development, for the obtaining of all its products, with a process based management approach and full technical support from all departments.
